ARTIST's THOUGHTS
"I am painting in the 21st century, at a time when technology, our culture and our physical world is changing at rapid speed. As an artist, my heart longs for luminous old-world vitality. My studio is in my zen garden and on the doorstep of the Salish Sea on Vancouver Island in the north Pacific. The land can morph into a different state within minutes. I respond to these transitions with what I see and how I feel. Like many people, it’s a yearning for something that is beyond our realm of existence. A Buddhist enthusiast, the emotion I invoke is granted by the grace of our natural world." - Nancyanne Cowell

BIOGRAPHY
From an early age, Nancyanne Cowell began painting our relationship with nature in the Canadian landscape. An Award of Distinction artist, she is well regarded for her powerful and atmospheric landscapes in oil-mixed media and expressive Impressionism. Ethereal and delightfully moody, Cowell's paintings stay with you and reveal themselves over time. Through introspection, she poetically paints through thoughts, memories and sublime experiences with nature. Combining timeless and progressive techniques, Cowell skillfully paints through extensive layers of colour with the lost-edge technique of the nineteenth century, tooled textures and mesmerizing transitions of pulled pigment.

Selected by Canada’s Research Chair for sustainable communities (and recipient of the Canada Council Arts Molson Prize), a complete series of Nancyanne Cowell's paintings is academically published. She made a unique and revolutionary body of work celebrating art, nature and the future of humanity; exhibited by the Bateman Gallery of Nature. At the regional level, she won the Designers Choice Award for artistic and innovative accomplishment in painting. Cowell also produces collections that exhibit in public galleries. Her award-winning artwork is collected in major private, corporate, institutional and public living spaces.

BFA (Hon) (Distinct), MBA, LFC, Award of Distinction for painting, University of Victoria; elected member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
