Event Description
This night of Korean food, music, dance and art is a fundraiser to help the Kalmo Refugee Support Group reunite a Somali refugee family. Through a private sponsorship arrangement the Kalmo Refugee Support Group is supporting Marwo Abdi, a Somali woman living in Victoria, to bring her mother, brother and two cousins to Canada from a refugee camp in Uganda. The event will also celebrate Korean cuisine and culture and provide an opportunity for people to socialize together, and learn more about refugee issues and local Korean communities.
The event is being organized by Korean community members and allies, and will include a buffet-style Korean dinner, traditional Korean music and dance, a display of traditional costumes and musical instruments, and an opportunity to buy handcrafts made by Korean artists. It is open to anyone interested in Korean culture or who wants to contribute to the work of the Kalmo Refugee Support Group. Doors will open at 5:00 and dinner will start at 5:30 PM.
Full ticket price is $30 for adults, $20 for teens, $10 for children, and $60 for family (2 adults + one child). To help with food preparation we encourage advance purchase - online at https://koreandinner.brownpapertickets.com/ or if you want to arrange in-person pickup (or need reduced pricing) please contact the Kalmo Refugee Support Group, kalmo.victoria@gmail.com. If we do not sell out advance tickets, a limited number of tickets will also be available on the night at the door.
As this is a fundraiser we ask that people pay full ticket price if they can, and there will also be invitation for additional cash donations at the event. However nobody will be turned away for lack of funds, and we particularly encourage refugee families to come participate in this community-building event and pay whatever you can afford.
Accessibility information is online at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wKknD_WBvrG77F4wftNJd9E8k31xNa7e95JgLDEApnA/edit?usp=sharing. This document includes details on wheelchair/walker/scooter accessibility, lighting, chairs, how to get to the venue, and bike/car parking.
There is one single-user bathroom (WC-accessible) and multiple group bathrooms (some are WC-accessible). We are exploring whether the group washrooms can be made gender-neutral for this event and whether childcare can be made available onsite, and will be posting more detailed information in the Accessibility document as this is available.
Note that the venue is a large building used by multiple groups at any given time so will not be a scent-free environment. To reduce negative impact on people with chemical sensitivities and respiratory conditions we ask that people attending this event please not wear perfume, cologne or other scented products.
